Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is just 92km2 long but has 40km worth of beaches along its coastline. The hilly terrain ensures plenty of vantage points to take in stunning views of the surrounding Hauraki Gulf where the climate tends to be warmer, sunnier and less humid than Auckland which lies just under 18km away.

Experience Waiheke

Waiheke today: one of New Zealand’s favourite holiday destinations

First settled around 1200 AD, Waiheke Island was initially home to the Maru iwi before later being claimed by the Toi iwi. Evidence of this early occupation remains in archaeological sites across the island, including fortified pā on narrow headlands and village terraces, such as those at Whakanewha. In the 1820s, the famous Hongi Hika defeated most of the inhabitants in a battle at Onetangi Beach, whose name means “weeping sands.”

Today, Waiheke Island is one of New Zealand’s favourite holiday destinations, with sandy beaches lined by flowering pōhutukawa and nikau palms. The northern coast features open beaches, while the south has large inlets, mangrove forests, and a sandspit lagoon perfect for kayaking. The island’s highest point is Maunganui Hill, at 231 metres above sea level.

Waiheke Island is home to around 9,500 permanent residents, with about 2,000 commuting daily to Auckland by ferry. As a popular holiday destination, the population can swell to roughly 50,000 in summer. Most residents live near the western end or along the isthmus between Huruhi Bay and Oneroa Bay, including the settlements of Oneroa, Blackpool, Palm Beach, Surfdale, and Ostend. Further east lies Onetangi on the north coast. Much of the eastern half consists of private vineyards and farmland. The island is socially diverse, from minimal-wage earners to some of New Zealand’s wealthiest, and is home to a vibrant creative community of artists, musicians, writers, scientists, poets, and actors.

Getting to Waiheke

From Walks to Wineries

There are over 100km of walking tracks on our island. Walks on Waiheke Island provide the perfect way to get close to nature and discover the beauty of the island. While some of the walks on Waiheke are an easy stroll, most walking experiences are of tramping track standard and require a reasonable level of fitness.

With hot dry summers and stony soils, Waiheke is home to boutique wineries that produce unique, high quality wines based on cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and chardonnay grape varieties. There are vineyards, wineries and olive groves throughout the island. We are happy to make recommendations to ensure you get the most out of your time on the island.
